Physical Therapy
No matter what part of your body hurts, a physical therapist can help you alleviate your symptoms without medication. This drug-free path to pain reduction has led the American Heart Association to recommend physical therapy for the treatment of pain resulting from tendinitis/bursitis, degenerative joint problems (osteoarthritis) and inflammatory joint problems (rheumatoid arthritis). Research shows that physical therapy combined with comprehensive medical management is just as effective as surgery in relieving pain and stiffness in moderate to severe osteoarthritis of the knee.
Running Analysis
The Runner’s Biomechanical Evaluation is designed to look at running technique and muscle/joint function. With this information, we may determine if there are any weak links in your posture or motion that may negatively impact your performance and/or lead to excessive-use injuries due to structural overload.
Our analysis is distinctly different from that found in a running store. The focus is not just on how you run, but also includes a musculoskeletal evaluation and your injury history. We perform a strength and flexibility exam, looking for areas of weakness, muscular imbalance and limitations in flexibility. Instruction is given as to appropriate strengthening and flexibility exercises to address any problem areas. In this way, past injuries may be addressed and future injuries successfully averted.
Using a high speed digital camera, we are able to film you running from the front, side and rear. Our ability to analyze this film frame by frame allows us to pick up on subtle problems not normally found in a video analysis. Evaluations are performed by licensed physical therapists with advanced board certification in orthopedics and strength and conditioning.
Pilates
Joseph Pilates designed exercises that helped him recover from the effects of childhood asthma and rickets. Originally called “Contrology,” his classical exercises focus on breath, strength, flexibility and increased mind/body awareness. He developed specialized equipment to provide more variety to these exercises, including both assistance and resistance. After immigrating to New York City, German-born Joseph and his wife Clara worked extensively with professional dancers, gymnasts, and figure skaters. Today, over eleven million people in the U.S. practice Pilates.
Massage Therapy
Orthopedic massage therapy is a unique combination of deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, myofascial release, neural mobilization, Active Release Therapy (ART), joint mobilizations, PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation), and assisted stretching. It has been found that these techniques aid in treating and preventing numerous injuries and promote a healthy and active lifestyle.
Our therapists are trained in these areas and because of their experience they are able to ensure the highest level of quality and care. Our treatments are effective for active individuals and athletes of all abilities who cannot let pain and injury slow them down.
