Overall Experience

Peak Physical Therapy is the best! I have been a patient of all three of the most professional, caring, and dedicated staff, Garrett, Genevieve and Valerie. Not only is the facility one of the best in terms of facilities and cleanliness, but you can’t get more professional PT services in the Bay Area. They know their stuff, not only in terms of care & treatment, but also the staff who assist with scheduling and their knowledge of insurance billing. I have been a patient for almost 4 years (2 injuries, one very serious) and can’t say enough about how great my entire PT experience has been. Don’t walk, run (if you can) to Peak PT when you need PT services. Lovely people, great facility, and the most professional and caring individuals you could find.

Work Injury

I recently had knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus. I chose PEAK Physical Therapy in Cupertino for rehab because both of my children had gone to PEAK for sports related injuries. I work for a local Fire Department and getting back to full strength in my knee was crucial. The job can be very physical and my therapist was well aware of the activities that I needed to be prepared for to go back to work. My PT was very innovative in creating exercises that would simulate similar physical situations that I would be exposed to at work. Each time I went in, he had thought of a new creative way to challenge my knee in preparing me to return to full duty at work. He also was in contact with my Orthopedic Surgeon to make sure that everyone was on the same page. My therapist was friendly, easy to work with and talk to. The staff at PEAK was also wonderful and easy to communicate with.

My TMJ disorder is healed! To me, that is nothing short of a miracle. I thought I was going to have to live in pain for the rest of my life, and since I plan on being around a while longer, it’s nice to live without pain! Every day, my back gets stronger, and my new posture gets a little bit easier. I attribute all of this improvement to the fact that Genevieve took the time to look at me (how seldom people do this for each other) and notice that I was sitting and standing crooked! And then took the steps to help me fix this! I am so grateful for your wisdom, kindness, patience and skill! Every day I wake up thankful for my new pain-free life. Many, many thanks!

I met Garrett through Silicon Valley Triathlon Club while training for an Ironman triathlon. During my training, I began experiencing a flare-up with an old knee injury and was fearful that my Ironman race was in jeopardy. After discussing the injury with Garrett, I made an appointment to go and see him at Peak Physical Therapy in Cupertino.

During my treatment, Garrett personally worked with me 2 times per week for 8 weeks. He never handed me off to an aide, which had been my experience at other PT clinics, and always treated me as an athlete with an important race goal in mind. He knew exactly how to fix my knee and had me do all the right exercises that targeted not only my injury, but my whole physique!

I really enjoyed going to see Garrett because we shared a passion for triathlon and endurance racing. The time with him always seemed to pass quickly and through our journey we became good friends. Not only is Garrett an expert in his field, he has an easy manner and high level of professionalism, making him a wonderful Physical Therapist! He also has a great passion for sports, and for helping anyone that has the motivation to go out and enjoy an active lifestyle. Be it the first time runner trying to finish that 5K or the professional triathlete trying to win a race. In addition to the great personal attention that I received from Garrett, I also received outstanding customer service and support from the front desk staff. Anytime I had an emergency and needed to reschedule, the front desk staff were always understanding and willing to work with me.

In summary, I cannot speak highly enough of Garrett and his staff at Peak Physical Therapy. They got me to the start line of Ironman Canada in 2011, where I had one of the best races of my life!

Hip Injury

I recently had my first experience with physical therapy due to some hip and shoulder problems. I came to Peak at the recommendation of a neighbor and longtime friend. I was assigned to Valerie as my therapist. She is excellent. She began with a thorough evaluation of my condition. She concurred with my doctor’s assessment that the problems were all soft tissue issues. After only a few sessions she completely cured my hip problem, applying a technique she had recently learned. I am back walking five miles to six miles most days without pain.

A most impressive aspect of Valerie’s treatment program is that she not only treated the problems I came in for, but she treated me as a whole person. For example, she told me she had noticed when I entered the Peak facility, which I was starting to develop the senior stoop. She gave me a set of exercises and stretches that are having visible impact on counteracting this natural affliction accompanying too many birthdays. In addition to exercises and stretches, she also gave me tools such as massage and other techniques for working problem areas myself so I can eventually become independent of the therapy center and take care of issues as soon as they arise. I have set up pulleys and hooks in my house so I can continue the exercises at and don’t need to wait for the next session. Valerie said that was commendable, but she wanted to see me performing them. When I demonstrated for her, she makes fine tuning adjustments that to me at first seem superficial, but I can really feel the difference when performing routines properly.

I know that people are quick to complain when something doesn’t go their way, so I wanted to take a few minutes to complement a job well done. As a result of my experience, I have written my doctor at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation and told him I highly recommend Peak for his patients in the south bay. Thank you,

- Greg W.

Endurance Athlete

I have been working with Garrett Akahoshi at Peak PT since 2007. During that time, he has successfully rehabilitated me from a number of both acute and chronic sports injuries, always returning me to full function, and in most cases stronger than I had been before the injury. In the course of treatment over the years, Garrett has also taught me to be more intelligent with my training on the whole, as well as how to focus on and improve physical weaknesses in order to better avoid injury in the long run. Under his treatment and professional guidance in the last six years I successfully completed my first half-Ironman triathlon, my first marathon, my first century bicycle ride, as well as a variety of other races. Thanks to Garrett, I have made it to the finish line of a number of races that I never expected to make it to because I thought my injuries would hold me back. Garrett’s own experience as a high-level athlete makes him uniquely qualified to bring injured athletes back to full function intelligently and quickly, but his broad knowledge transfers to anyone looking to rehabilitate from a surgery, occupational, or any other type of injury.

In addition to the high level of expertise and professionalism of the medical team, Peak PT’s office staff is extremely helpful and accommodating in all aspects from scheduling to billing, as well as in regards to any general questions patients may have. I am hugely appreciative for the ability Peak PT has given me to return to my sports and yoga time after time, after each injury, and I would very highly recommend Peak PT to anyone looking for physical therapy for both acute and chronic injuries.

After more than 10 years of dealing with a major pain in the butt (literally) I arrived at the office of Peak Physical Therapy. I had managed the condition through various modalities of cortisone shots, chiro care, massage, ice, drugs etc, but by the time I arrived at Peak Physical Therapy I was having pain just walking. The very first thing that my therapist went through was to re-look at the condition, where all other professionals had treated the butt itself, my PT looked at the cause and discovered that the problem was a combination of weak abs, tight back and tight hamstrings was causing the pelvis to tilt over and thus cause the pain in the butt. WOW! What a difference. Even though I’m fast approaching my fifties, my running times have gone back to those of my thirties through a combination of no pain and longer strides due to increased flexibility.

Their approach and treatment protocols have kept this ageing triathlete back in the performance ranks and I would wholeheartedly endorse Physical Therapy for anyone who’s looking to extend their athletic career.

Knee Injury

As a former runner and now, as a senior citizen, a knee meniscus tear halted my favorite aerobic activity. A referral from a sports medicine surgeon directed me to Peak Physical Therapy. The friendly and professional ambiance at Peak, gave me a sense of confidence in their care. My physical therapist’s prescription of various exercises and her knowledge of the related muscles that had to be strengthened, assured me of a successful recovery. She was able to monitor my progress with her assessments of my physical improvements along with questions of my experience of the therapy. Her instructions were clear and she even suggested improvements with my posture and form. My PT and the entire staff evoke a positive sense of competence in their work. I feel great with my recovery and am inspired to improve on the health of my entire body.

Back Injury

Before I came into Peak Physical therapy, I had a major lower back spasm from a herniated L5 disc. Years before, this had occurred while I was living in New York City, so this was the first time it had happened while I was living in Silicon Valley. The New York physical therapist was helpful; however, my experience at Peak Physical Therapy was far superior. My physical therapist was very knowledgeable and informative about how my disc injury was impacting my physical pain. She used traction, deep tissue massage and electric stimulation to help heal and loosen the tightness. I came in very stiff, not able to bend past my knees. When I left, I was able to touch my toes. So there was instant improvement. I was much more mobile than before. This was a vast improvement from my first physical therapy experience when I was living in New York, which took 3-4 sessions to get some flexibility. My PT also showed me some effective stretches and core strengthening exercises that sped up the process and continue to keep my back out of pain. She printed out diagrams and exercise charts that made it really easy to understand and follow. My PT was very patient and understanding. She also had a way of explaining things in a clear and thoughtful manner. I felt very comforted and confident in my recovery. I am much more educated and confident in knowing that I can be proactive in keeping my lower back healthy, flexible, and pain free.

This is the second time I have had care at Peak over the last few years. Nothing personal, but I hope it’s the last time!

I wanted to let you know that Valerie has always been a delight to work with. She is professional, knowledgeable and non-judgmental. She’s quite a find!

Bike Fit

Before I went to Garrett for a bike fit, I knew him as a PT and triathlete. Last season, I saw him briefly for a sprained ankle and (really) to ask if racing on it would break me. Knowing that I was going to race anyway, he spoke frankly about the pros and cons of racing with an injury. He knows the rigors of triathlons and the tendency of endurance athletes to push themselves, so I appreciated his point of view. This year, after a few attempts to get my bike fit right, the shop guys told me to visit a “real” bike fitter, someone who could dial in the fit based on the exact needs of my body. I went to Garrett because I already trusted his expertise as a triathlete and PT. He used a Computrainer to assess my current power levels – but more than that, he checked my flexibility and assessed muscle weakness, both of which were impacting getting the exact fit that I needed. When I walked in for my appointment, I blurted out that I was frustrated with my bike and scared to ride. When I walked out, I had more information about my cycling form and quite a bit of homework to fix muscle weakness and imbalance. When I rode my bike a few days later, I was able to do my first long ride (the long course for Wildflower) since I'd gotten the bike 6 weeks earlier. No knee pain, no quad fatigue, no calf strain, no numbness in the nether region. My bike and I are friends finally.

I have been doing triathlons for 15+ years now and along the way I have had my fair share of injuries. From your typical plantar fasciitis to having surgical repaired arms, Peak-PT has been amazing at getting me back in the pool, bike or track. In a few situations they even proved the doctors wrong in how well they were able to get me back to recovery. Peak Physical Therapists understand athletes and how to get them back on the right path. I highly recommend Peak Physical Therapy. I have even referred my mom to them!

Valerie's knowledge and skills as a Pilates instructor and as a physical therapist has helped me gain strength and stability, reverse the effects of osteoporosis, and improve my overall health. Peak is well equipped with a variety of Pilates equipment for use in our sessions and Valerie's breadth of knowledge and techniques keeps the sessions interesting, challenging, and fun.

Shoulder Injury

As a collegiate water polo player I put a ton of stress on my shoulders and back resulting in 2 surgeries to stop the pain over the last few years. With the help of Peak, I have been able to get back into the water and keep playing masters water polo at a high level. The staff is friendly, but still pushes to get the best results for quick rehabilitation. I also found that the new facilities provided all the equipment I needed to get myself ready to compete again.

Bike Fit

I highly recommend Garrett Akahoshi for PT and bike fitting. As a PT and a triathlete himself he is exceptionally well-qualified to help you get the most out of your bike. Garrett combines fit and strength assessment to provide a custom prescription for getting stronger. He's helped me get faster and more comfortable on the bike.

Hamstring Injury

I strained my hamstring while cycling and was referred to Peak by my doctor. My therapist evaluated my injury and got right to the heart of the problem: flexibility and strength. He gave me stretches and exercises that focused on my injury and after 6 sessions I was feeling much better. My PT set clear goals for recovery and helped me meet them. He also helped me strengthen muscles I didn’t injure but contributed to my hamstring injury, which improved my overall fitness dramatically. I highly recommend Peak for any PT issues you run into!

- Andrew B.

Customer Satisfaction

Thanks for helping me avoid the needles and knives! I’m off and running, not perfect yet, but I’ll keep up with your exercises and stretches. I’m glad I had the opportunity to work with you. I learned a lot. All the best to you and yours!

Overall Experience

I would highly recommend Peak. Great care, great people, great atmosphere.

Elbow Injury

My elbow has been feeling great with little notice of any soreness or pain. I am much more aware of “how” I reach or lift things with my right arm. When I need to do heavier work, I make sure to use my “bandit” every time. In the two years I’ve had pain in my elbow, this is the first reprieve I’ve had. Thank you for your expertise and therapy in helping my elbow to feel better. I will continue to “remember” to do stretches whenever I can.
Thank you again!

- Susie W.

I would recommend Peak PT to anyone. You are very well looked after. My PT understood my problems and always found ways to help me feel better.
